Counterexamples in Probability and Statistics
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction A counterexample is an example or result that is counter to intuition or commonly held beliefs. It can be a powerful way of disproving an incorrect statement or conjecture. In this paper some incorrect beliefs commonly held by secondary school students in probability and statistics are presented. Simple counterexamples that disprove these beliefs are provided and discussed in detail. Counterexamples that are more technical and apply to more advanced areas of probability and statistics can be found in Romano and Siegel (1986).

Efficient validation of self-adaptive applications by counterexample probability maximization
Self-adaptive applications’ executions can be affected by uncertainty factors like unreliable sensing and flawed adaptation and therefore often error-prone. Existing methods can verify the applications suffering uncertainty and report counterexamples. However, such verification results can deviate from reality when the uncertainty specification used in verification is itself imprecise. This thu...
متن کاملCOUNTEREXAMPLES IN CHAOTIC GENERALIZED SHIFTS
In the following text for arbitrary $X$ with at least two elements, nonempty countable set $Gamma$ we make a comparative study on the collection of generalized shift dynamical systems like $(X^Gamma,sigma_varphi)$ where $varphi:GammatoGamma$ is an arbitrary self-map. We pay attention to sub-systems and combinations of generalized shifts with counterexamples regarding Devaney, exact Dev...
متن کاملA Review of Statistics and Probability Journals in ISI Database
As in recent years the scientific productivity about ISI database and other related database have been increased, it is eligible for researchers of Statistics in Iran to know more about these journals and their statues in ISI database. In this study with the use of bibliometric methods, we have reviewed the status of Statistics and Probability . From all nations around the world, these are only...
متن کاملNew Counterexamples for Sums-differences
We present new counterexamples, which provide stronger limitations to sums-differences statements than were previously known. The main idea to improve over the original counterexamples by Ruzsa is to consider non-uniform probability measures.
متن کاملOn quantum statistics in data analysis
Originally, quantum probability theory was developed to analyze statistical phenomena in quantum systems, where classical probability theory does not apply, because the lattice of measurable sets is not necessarily distributive. On the other hand, it is well known that the lattices of concepts, that arise in data analysis, are in general also non-distributive, albeit for completely different re...
